Do you need to have talent to learn to draw?

Published on 26 February 2025 at 12:06

One of the most important life lessons I have learned from art, is that if you’re willing to dedicate all your spare time and effort into it, for years and years, you can learn anything.

Do you need talent

Even if you believe you have no talent, anyone can learn to be an artist with the right training, tools, and passion!

You may think you have no talent, but others may well appreciate what you draw. A natural talent may make the learning process easier, but drawing is as much of a skill as a talent. As with any other skill, this can be learned.

Ask yourself, do you think all the artists we now think of as naturally talented thought they were at the time they started drawing? I doubt it. Some may well have had the same doubts you are having right now. We all doubt ourselves at certain times. Stay focused and practice and you will see your drawing improve. That is the only sure thing in the world of art.

To me my “talent” was simply a passion and I was determent so succeed.

Does Drawing Require Talent?

NO, talent may well make the creative process easier, but anyone can learn how to draw.

Art is also a great form of relaxation for some it sure is mine, and they care less about the final product. Concentrate on the process of creating the art and you will benefit in some way.

Always remember, someone who works hard but has little natural talent can learn to draw faster than a talented person who never practices.

My Very First drawing of an animal back in jan 2017, I was so proud of it!

Is Drawing Considered a Talent?

NO, drawing is a skill. The truth is anyone with the will to learn, the time an effort can teach themselves to draw.

People with zero talent can still learn to draw, but it might take them longer than someone more talented.

Some people might feel that it’s a skill only certain people possess, but any skill can be learned. Some people are more naturally talented but the only   way to succeed is with practice and hard work.

There are some people who are talented and will get better results faster. But there are also individuals who started without a particular talent and just developed that skill.

Is Drawing a Talent or Skill?

Drawing is very definitely a skill. Talent may wel make the learning process easier but is no guarantee of success. Someone can be naturally talented but have no desire to improve. They don’t practice and try to learn so they won’t improve.

If you practice, your drawings will become more refined and detailed. You might be surprised how quickly you improve. Keep your first drawing and save them to look back at. You will see the improvements that you have achieved as you learn new lessons.

Even if someone with a talent don’t practice, he won’t get better.

Practice is the key in all cases.

However, this is something that doesn’t happen to talented people. See, talent doesn’t only make you draw better than others. And it also makes you learn to draw faster than others. Talented people still need to practice a lot, but not as much as zero-talented people. With things being like that, many people will think they cannot draw after only three months of drawing practice, but the truth is that they just needed to keep doing it for a more extended period.

So, Are Artists Born or Made?

It’s a little bit of both. Many believe, I included, that everyone is born an artist. I wasn’t born with an exceptional talent for drawing; I had to draw a lot to achieve the drawing level I have up to this point. I’m improving, and I’m sure everyone can do it if they put in the work it takes to get better at anything, including drawing.

But in the end, every person is different, so everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. Based on this, it is crucial to be aware of the problems you might face, whether you’re talented or not.

Here is some of my early works, still searching Wich style it’s going to be.

How can I learn Drawing the right way?

So, if you want to learn drawing, then you will have a lot to learn. But don´t get discouraged! Here are the Fundamentals, that you must learn to Improve at drawing fast.

  • Perspective
  • Anatomy
  • Rendering (Light and Shadow)
  • Color theory

You don´t need to learn them in this order but I would recommend you to. These are all huge topics but if you go through them methodical, then you will learn them quite fast.

But don´t expect to learn everything right away. It will take years until you are confident in every aspect of these fundamentals. But you will see Improvements right away when you start to learn these fundamentals

Conclusion

Drawing is a skill, but talent still plays a role in how quickly or how good you can get at it at any given time. If drawing were only a skill, artists wouldn’t get better and better over time. They would be perfect artists from day one, and we know that’s not the case. Instead, it’s prevalent to see beginner artists become exceptionally good at drawing over the years, just as you see with almost any learnable skill.

If anything were easy, then anyone would be able to do it! Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you will be a professional artist in just two weeks. 99% of the artists you admire had practiced and studied drawing so much it’s natural they are so good at it.

Everyone’s pace is different, you just need to find yours, and you will get better at drawing over time. I promise.

So, can you learn to draw if you have no talent? Yes, you can. Follow a routine, practice mindfully, and most importantly, enjoy the process.

Happy drawing!
